William R. “Bud” Moore (1917-2010)

Bud Moore's Coyote Forest property in Montana’s Swan Valley was the first conservation easement that Vital Ground negotiated and held. It was Bud’s special bond with grizzlies that first led him to Vital Ground—an association that evolved into an inspiring friendship between Bud and our Vital Ground staff and board. Bud's insight, integrity, great heart and humor were molded by long years of intimate daily connection with wildlife and wilderness. Yet to understand how best to care for wildlife and wild places, his advice was simply, "Listen to the land." — VG

Conserving Habitat and Livelihoods-New Vital Ground Conservation Easement Protects Grizzly Habitat and a Working Forest in MontanaFrom the Spring 2006 issue of Vital News.

Deep in the pine and fir woods of Montana's Swan Valley, Bud Moore's cabin sits on a low ridge overlooking a quiet pondedged with alder and willow. Every visitor is greeted like an old friend: ushered into the bright log home and made welcome at the kitchen table. With a cup of coffee steaming in your hands, it's not long before you're swept away on tales of Bud's life as a wilderness ranger, a forester, and especially of his years caring for "Coyote Forest," this 80-acre piece of wildlife heaven.
