Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem
YellowstoneNational Park is the heart of this region, yet the ecosystem covers a vastarea of approximately 20 million acres, including Grand Teton NationalPark, parts of four national forests, several wildlife refuges and stateand private lands in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. The Yellowstone grizzlypopulation has expanded its numbers and range since the 1970's, and nowtotals at least 600 bears (Servheen 2006). To date, this is the onlygrizzly population that has been delisted from threatened statusbecause it has met all of the criteria set for recovery. Nonetheless, as humandevelopment continues to encroach into areas surrounding the Yellowstoneecosystem, Vital Ground remains committed to ensuring that Yellowstone'sgrizzly population always has room to roam.
