Sloth Bear (Melursus ursinus)

Sloth Bear (Melursus ursinus) - in captivity at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, Washington, DC

  • 200 to 300 pounds (91-136 kg)
  • 5 to 6 feet (1.5-1.8 meters) in length
  • Hair is long and shaggy with a white or yellow "Y" mark upon its chest
  • Long white muzzle with lips and no front teeth used to create a vacuum with which to suck termites and ants from their mounds
  • Longest claws of any bear
  • Live in forested areas of Sri Lanka, the Indian subcontinent, and Nepal
  • Communicate among themselves using a bizarre range of howls, rattles, huffs, gurgles and facial expressions
  • Extremely tolerant of heat and often doze in direct sunlight despite their thick fur
