- 4.25 to 6.25 feet (1.3-1.9 meters) in length
- Have only 13 pairs of ribs, one less than other bear species
- Sole survivors of a subfamily of short-faced bears that ranged across North and South America during the last Ice Age
- Today these bears are found only in the Andes of South America
- Said to be the most arboreal of all bears
- Tawny markings around their eyes are darker than the rest of their fur, giving the appearance of a bear perhaps wearing glasses
- Chiefly vegetarian diet
