Swan Valley Grizzly Bear Habitat Conservation Initiative
The Swan Valley in western Montana lies in the vast Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem (NCDE) between two great mountain wilderness areas and core grizzly habitats: the Mission Mountains and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. Grizzlies use the valley-bottom habitats of the Swan throughout the seasons, some taking up residence year round. Wetlands, streams, and a dense mix of coniferous woodlands, aspen and cottonwood provide important resources for bears and a rich array of other wildlife species. The region has traditionally based its economy on timber resources, yet as with many beautiful mountain valleys, the Swan is undergoing rapid change and growth.
In 2004, Vital Ground launched the Swan Valley Grizzly Bear Habitat Conservation Initiative to work with local partners and landowners to protect wildlife habitat while sustaining the rural nature of the valley. Vital Ground's efforts so far total 750 acres of permanently protected habitat in the Swan. One project has lead to another as neighbors learned of Vital Ground’s habitat protection work in the valley, and our efforts have enjoyed local community support. To date, the Swan Valley Initiative has been funded by several national foundations, private donors, and the Missoula County Open Space Bond Fund.
