The heart of the Bitterroot Ecosystem Grizzly Bear Recovery Area is in Idaho’ Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness. The ecosystem also includes a sliver of northwestern Montana from Darby to Noxon.
The first grizzly sighting in more than a half century in the Bitterroot Ecosystem was in 2007 when a hunter misidentified a grizzly bear for a black bear and shot and killed the grizzly. According to the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (2013), no grizzly population inhabits the Bitterroot Ecosystem.
Vital Ground has not yet accomplished projects in the Bitterroot Ecosystem. The best available information on the Bitterroot Ecosystem is found on the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s website.
