Year: 2003
Acres: 12,526
Ecosystem: Greater Yellowstone (GYE)
Location: ID – Caribou-Targhee National Forest
Project Type: Grazing allotment retirement

Summary: Vital Ground provided a grant to the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) to help retire a sheep allotment in the Island Park area of the Targhee National Forest. The permits included acreage around several creeks and West Lake, which is critical habitat for grizzlies. This area is immediately west of the town of West Yellowstone, bordering Yellowstone National Park, and is significant because it provides connectivity to the Centennial Range in southwestern Montana. Bears have been re-colonizing the area during the last decade.
