Year: 2003
Project Name: Blackrock-Spread Creek Allotment
Acres: 87,500
Ecosystem: Greater Yellowstone (GYE)
Location: WY – Bridger-Teton National Forest
Project Type: Grazing allotment retirement

Summary: Vital Ground provided a grant to the National Wildlife Federation to help retire this grazing allotment. Located in northwestern Wyoming, 20 miles south of Yellowstone National Park, and bordering Grand Teton National Park, this habitat provides a wildlife corridor between Yellowstone National Park, the Teton Wilderness, and Grand Teton National Park. The grazing allotment retirement deal provided 87,500 acres of wildlife habitat-25 miles long and 7 miles wide-and removed cattle from the path of grizzly bears foraging for food. Other financial partners included the Wiancko Family Donor Advised Fund of the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the Wildlife Heritage Foundation of Wyoming, the Charles Engelhard Foundation, the Arthur B. Schultz Foundation, and the Greater Yellowstone Coalition.
