eastern edge of the Selkirk Mountains to Vital Ground. The property is located close to two wildlife management areas and adjacent to other public lands. The property harbors grizzlies, black bears and a diverse array of other wildlife, and the Weilers wished to permanently safeguard the land as wildlife habitat. Prior to the donation, the Weilers removed an old building on the property, helping to reclaim the habitat values of the land. This donation provided another milestone in Vital Ground’s Selkirk Grizzly Bear Habitat Conservation Initiative.

During the height of the 2015 fire season, the Parker Ridge Fire spotted eastward down the face of the Selkirks to the Kootenai Valley floor and then burned back upslope and completely engulfed the property. By fall 2015, efforts were underway to eliminate dead-standing timber along the sides of the county road that bisects the 42 acres. Restoration efforts continued during the spring of 2016.
