Discover Tenacious Beasts with Christopher J. Preston

From bears in Italy to bison in North America, wildlife species are defying the odds in our age of sprawling human impact. Against the backdrop of Earth’s ongoing biodiversity crisis, Montana author and environmental philosopher Christopher J. Preston tells the hopeful and intricate stories of several species’ recoveries in Tenacious Beasts: Wildlife Recoveries That Change How We Think About Animals. While Vital Ground’s habitat protection work focuses on the lower 48 states, we draw much inspiration and learning from the brown bear populations of Alaska. We’re also thrilled to return as a sponsor for the 46th International Wildlife Film Festival, held April 22-27 in Missoula, Mont. Join Vital Ground staff at the Roxy Theater for the April 23 screening of The Giant Bears of Alaska, a new documentary directed by Jurgen Hansen and Simone Stripp that highlights the challenges faced by brown bears on Kodiak Island as they adapt to a changing environment. We’ll be tabling in the lobby before and after the film—come say hello! You can also buy a virtual ticket to watch the film at home if you can’t make it to Missoula.

Date: Sunday, April 23
Time: 12:30pm MDT
Location: Roxy Theater, Missoula, Mont.

Meet the author of Grizzly Bears: Guardians of the Wilderness

Frances Backhouse’s book highlights grizzlies for young readers.

Bears inspire a love of wildlife and connection to nature in people young and old. British Columbia-based author and former biologist Frances Backhouse shares that love of grizzlies and highlights their ecological importance in Grizzly Bears: Guardians of the Wilderness. The book is written primarily for 9- to 12-year olds (and features a profile of a young Vital Ground supporter!) but is drawing rave reviews from bear lovers of all ages. Backhouse will give a talk on the book and grizzly recovery on April 24 at the Montana Natural History Center in Missoula. She will be joined by Jennifer Fortin-Noreus, a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Grizzly Bear Recovery Program.

Date: Monday, April 24
Time: 12-1pm MDT
Location: Montana Natural History Center, Missoula, Mont.
